About Us
About Us
Camp Adventure is an environmental learning facility that offers year-round programs for schools, families, and community organizations. From field trips and team-building experiences to leadership development and outdoor education, our mission is to inspire growth, connection, and a love of learning through nature.
The Forest Academy at Camp Adventure is a full-day, school-year program currently serving a PreK/Kindergarten classroom.
For the 2026–2027 school year, the Forest Academy plans to transition to a combined K/1 classroom as our students continue to grow.
Looking ahead, we are thoughtfully exploring future growth. One option under discussion for the 2027–2028 school year includes opening two classrooms at Camp Adventure: a PreK/K classroom and a 1/2 classroom. Any future expansion will be guided by enrollment, staffing, and the needs of our families.
At every stage, our focus remains the same—providing a full-day learning experience that blends outdoor education with Montessori-inspired practices to support curiosity, independence, and a love of learning in every child.
Discover the Forest School Philosophy
At Camp Adventure Forest School, we believe children thrive when they are immersed in nature. Our forest school embraces child-led exploration, hands-on learning, and the freedom to develop at their own pace. Outdoor classrooms inspire creativity, build resilience, and foster a deep connection to the natural world.
How Montessori Guides Our Approach
The Montessori method is the foundation of our forest school. Using Maria Montessori's principles, we integrate practical life skills, sensorial exploration, and individualized learning into outdoor activities. Children develop independence and confidence as they engage with nature’s endless learning opportunities.
This blend of forest school and Montessori education creates a holistic environment where children grow socially, emotionally, and academically—all while cultivating a lifelong love for learning and the environment.

Constructive Triangle Work

Students engage in purposeful, hands-on work in our outdoor mud kitchen, using natural materials to explore creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. Experiences like this reflect our Montessori-inspired approach, where learning happens through meaningful interaction with the environment—rain or shine.

At Forest Academy, students spend time outdoors every day, in all seasons. Learning happens through real experiences—exploring, observing, creating, and problem-solving in nature. This holistic approach supports the whole child and connects academics, movement, and the environment in meaningful ways.
Students explore the concept of sinking and floating through hands-on work at the pond. What began as a simple observation lesson naturally expanded into a three-part experience—designing and building boats, testing how materials float, and making thoughtful changes to improve speed and stability. This kind of child-led exploration reflects our Montessori-inspired approach, where curiosity guides deeper learning.

PreK/K Program
Daily Rhythm
A Day at Forest Academy
At Forest Academy, each day is designed to provide children with the comfort of routine, the joy of discovery, and the freedom to learn through Montessori-inspired practices and meaningful experiences in nature. While we follow a consistent daily rhythm, we remain flexible and responsive to weather, student interests, and individual needs.
We aim to begin each day outdoors whenever possible; however, during colder months when snowsuits and extra layers are needed, mornings often begin indoors, with outdoor learning taking place later in the day.
Daily Rhythm
Arrival & Morning Start (8:30 AM)
Students begin the day with a calm and welcoming start. This time allows for arrival, connection, and preparation for learning. Morning routines may take place indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather and seasonal needs.
Morning Circle
Students gather as a community to build relationships, share observations, and review the day ahead. Teachers introduce Montessori lessons, new materials, and skills from our Science of Reading curriculum during this time.
Montessori Work Cycle
Children engage in independent and small-group work at their own pace. Lessons are individualized and hands-on, allowing students to build skills through meaningful practice. PreK and Kindergarten students may work separately at times to focus on age-appropriate skills, then come back together as a whole group.
Lunch & Social Play
Meals are shared together, followed by unstructured social play. Outdoor play occurs in all types of weather and supports social-emotional growth and peer relationships.
Outdoor Learning & Exploration
Students spend extended time outdoors each day. During colder months, outdoor learning typically takes place after lunch, once students are prepared for winter weather. Outdoor experiences may include nature exploration, science investigations, building projects, creative play, and hands-on academic learning connected to classroom lessons.
Afternoon Work Cycle
After outdoor exploration, students return to focused indoor work. This time allows children to apply what they have learned, practice independence, and engage in creative or academic projects.
Closing Circle & Dismissal (2:30 PM)
The day concludes with reflection, gratitude, and celebration of learning before students prepare to head home.
Family Partnership
Forest Academy values strong partnerships with families. Parents are welcome to volunteer throughout the year by supporting activities such as cooking days, sharing a skill or interest, or assisting with special projects. Our goal is to maintain open communication and create a welcoming environment where families feel connected, informed, and confident in their child’s learning experience
Why Families Choose Forest Academy

Montessori in Nature
At Camp Adventure, Montessori principles guide our Forest Academy program. Instead of limiting learning to a traditional classroom, we extend those principles throughout our entire camp. At Forest Academy, the whole Camp Adventure property is our classroom. Learning can happen anywhere, at any time, through meaningful experiences in nature.
By using the natural environment as both inspiration and learning material, children engage in hands-on, real-world learning that supports independence, curiosity, and a deep connection to their surroundings.
Montessori in Nature Includes:
Practical Life Skills
Children practice real-world skills through everyday experiences such as caring for outdoor spaces, pouring water, gathering natural materials, building, and using age-appropriate tools. These activities build independence, coordination, and confidence.
Sensorial Exploration
Nature provides rich opportunities for children to explore their senses—feeling different textures, listening to natural sounds, observing changes in weather, and noticing scents found outdoors. These experiences help children make sense of the world around them.
Academic Learning in Nature
Academic concepts are woven naturally into the outdoor environment. Math is explored through measuring, counting, and building with natural materials, while literacy comes to life through storytelling, observation, and meaningful conversations inspired by students’ experiences outdoors.
Learning at Forest Academy is flexible, child-centered, and responsive—allowing lessons to unfold wherever curiosity leads, whether that’s by the pond, on the trails, or in the woods.

Benefits for Young Learners
The PreK/K program at Forest Academy supports the whole child—socially, emotionally, academically, and physically. Through a blend of Montessori-inspired learning, daily time outdoors, and real-world experiences, children learn by doing, exploring, and engaging with their environment. This approach builds independence, confidence, and a genuine love of learning.
Key Benefits Include:
Social & Emotional Growth
Small-group learning, shared routines, collaborative outdoor play, and community experiences help children build communication skills, emotional awareness, and self-confidence.
Hands-On Academic Learning
Children explore early literacy, math, and science through meaningful, hands-on experiences—building, experimenting, observing, and problem-solving in ways that support early learning standards.
Real-World Learning Through Field Trips
Students typically participate in one field trip each month. These experiences extend classroom learning into the community and align with Montessori principles by offering hands-on, real-world connections that deepen understanding and curiosity.
Physical Development
Daily outdoor movement supports gross and fine motor development as children climb, balance, dig, build, and explore their environment.
Independence & Curiosity
Montessori-inspired practices encourage children to make choices, take responsibility, and follow their interests—laying the foundation for lifelong learning.
A Connection to Nature
Spending time outdoors every day helps children develop respect for the environment, adaptability, and a sense of wonder about the natural world.

Learning Beyond the Schedule
Forest Academy does not follow a traditional “specials” schedule, such as art, music, or PE, on set days. Instead, learning is integrated throughout the day in meaningful, real-life ways.
Rather than rotating through separate classes, students experience rich, hands-on learning through projects, outdoor exploration, and authentic experiences that naturally blend art, movement, science, literacy, and creativity together.
Throughout the year, we intentionally invite parents, community partners, and local experts to be part of the learning experience. These visits help bring learning to life and allow children to connect with real people, real stories, and real-world skills.
Learning Beyond the Schedule may include:
-
Hands-on projects that integrate art, science, and problem-solving
-
Outdoor science investigations and nature-based learning experiences
-
Cooking and practical life experiences are supported by family volunteers
-
Movement, building, and teamwork challenges across the camp property
-
Community partners sharing skills, careers, and passions
-
Guest Storytelling with parents and community members reading stories, sharing books they love, or connecting stories to real-life experiences
-
Parent-led activities that make learning personal, meaningful, and memorable
This approach allows learning to be deep, flexible, and authentic, while honoring student interests and curiosity. Instead of short, isolated “specials,” children engage in experiences that are woven into their daily learning and connected to the world around them.
At Forest Academy, learning isn’t confined to a single subject or time block—it’s an experience.
Why Montessori?

Learning by Doing at Forest Academy
Montessori education is built on the idea that children learn best through hands-on experiences. Instead of worksheets or passive learning, students actively explore concepts by working with materials, making choices, and solving real problems.
At Forest Academy, this approach comes to life both indoors and outdoors. Children use Montessori materials to explore math, language, and practical life skills, and then extend that learning into nature—counting with stones, building with sticks, sorting leaves, and testing ideas in real-world settings.
By learning through movement, touch, and exploration, children develop strong problem-solving skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of concepts. This blend of Montessori learning and outdoor experiences helps children stay engaged, curious, and excited about school.
Independence and Confidence
Montessori education encourages children to become independent thinkers and confident learners. At Forest Academy, students are given opportunities to make choices, solve problems, and work at their own pace within a supportive environment. This helps children develop self confidence, responsibility, and a strong sense of ownership over their learning.
Through hands on experiences both indoors and outdoors, children practice real life skills such as caring for their environment, building structures, preparing food, and working through challenges with peers. These experiences empower students to trust their abilities, try new things, and grow into capable, resilient learners that carry these skills beyond the classroom.
Connection with Nature
Montessori places a strong emphasis on learning through the senses, which naturally connects with outdoor education. At Forest Academy, time spent in nature supports sensory development, environmental awareness, and a sense of curiosity and wonder.
By using the outdoors as an extension of the classroom, students learn to observe closely, care for their surroundings, and develop a meaningful connection with the natural world. These experiences help children build respect for the environment while supporting their overall growth and well being.

What are the qualifications of the teachers at The Camp Adventure Forest Academy?
Forest Academy is staffed by licensed Indiana teachers who are certified in Montessori education through the North American Montessori Center (NAMC). Both the classroom teacher and the Camp Program Coordinator have completed Montessori training for Early Childhood Ages 3-6 and hold NAMC certification.
The program is also supported by an instructional aide who meets the same hiring requirements, training, and procedures as those used by Muncie Community Schools for instructional aides.
All Forest Academy staff are trained in CPR and First Aid and participate in ongoing professional development to support Montessori-inspired learning, outdoor education, and student safety.
What Will a Class Look Like?
Learning Spaces at Forest Academy
At Forest Academy, learning extends far beyond four walls. The entire Camp Adventure property serves as our classroom, allowing students to learn through hands-on experiences in nature each day.
Current Program
Forest Academy currently serves a full-day PreK and Kindergarten classroom located at Camp Adventure. Students attend Camp Adventure daily as part of the school day and learn through a blend of Montessori-inspired practices, outdoor education, and real-world experiences. Class sizes and staffing follow Indiana guidelines to ensure safe, supportive, and developmentally appropriate learning environments.
Looking Ahead
Forest Academy is thoughtfully growing. For the 2026–2027 school year, the program plans to transition to a combined Kindergarten and First Grade (K/1) classroom. Any future expansion beyond that will be guided by student needs, staffing, and program sustainability.
Our Learning Environment
The program is supported by Forest Academy staff, the Camp Program Coordinator, family volunteers, and strong partnerships with community organizations. Camp Adventure’s 40-acre campus provides space for exploration, movement, and discovery, allowing for personalized learning and meaningful, hands-on experiences for every child.
How do you ensure safety?
Safety at Forest Academy
Safety is a top priority at Forest Academy. We are intentional about creating an environment where children can explore, take appropriate risks, and learn with confidence.
To support student safety, we:
-
Maintain low student-to-staff ratios that meet Indiana guidelines
-
Conduct daily checks of learning areas and outdoor spaces
-
Ensure staff are trained in CPR and First Aid
-
Teach clear safety expectations and routines to students
-
Supervise children closely during all indoor and outdoor activities
Our approach balances adventure with thoughtful risk management. Students are encouraged to explore, climb, build, and problem-solve within clearly defined boundaries, helping them develop confidence, awareness, and responsibility while staying safe.
What will my child need to bring or wear?
What Will My Child Need to Bring or Wear?
Proper clothing is essential for success at Forest Academy, where students learn outdoors year-round. Dressing appropriately allows children to stay comfortable, safe, and fully engaged in learning throughout the day.
For colder months, we follow a layering approach to outdoor clothing. Families can find a helpful layering guide linked on our website from Outdoor School Shop, along with a visual chart showing temperature ranges and recommended layers. These resources are also referenced in the Parent Handbook.
Cold Weather Layering
Families provide all clothing layers.
Base Layer: Insulated, moisture-wicking layers worn closest to the body (Many students arrive at school wearing their base layers)
-
Mid Layer: Warm layers such as fleece or sweatshirts
-
Outer Layer: Waterproof and wind-resistant layers
Many families choose to send puddle jumpers for rainy days and snowsuits for colder months. These outer layers are typically kept at school so students can easily transition outdoors without needing to bring them back and forth each day.

-
Keeping outer layers at school helps support independence and smooth transitions.
-
Proper clothing ensures students can fully participate in outdoor learning every day.

What Are Your Practices and Policies Around Technology?
We believe nature should take center stage in childhood development. Technology is minimally used at Camp Adventure, such as referencing a wildlife identification app when needed. Exceptions may occur for testing or benchmarking requirements.
Outside of school, we encourage families to limit screen time, especially for young children. As a community, we support practices that emphasize:
- Limited technology use during school time.
- More opportunities for real-world play and independence.
Our approach helps children develop a deep connection with nature while fostering creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking skills.
Will My Child Adjust to a Traditional Classroom After Forest Academy?
This is a common and important question, and one we take seriously.
Montessori education is designed to build strong foundations that support children in any learning environment they encounter later. At Forest Academy, students develop independence, focus, problem-solving skills, and self-regulation—skills that actually help children transition successfully into traditional classrooms.
While Montessori classrooms may look different from traditional classrooms, the core academic foundations are still met. Students at Forest Academy engage in early literacy, math, and language development aligned with school expectations, while also learning how to follow routines, work independently, collaborate with peers, and listen to adults—skills essential in any classroom setting.
Research and long-term observations of Montessori students show that children who have participated in Montessori programs are not less likely to acclimate to traditional classrooms. In fact, many transition smoothly because they:
-
Are comfortable working independently
-
Can follow multi-step directions
-
Have strong self-control and attention skills
-
Feel confident asking questions and advocating for themselves
At Forest Academy, we also intentionally support transitions. As students grow, teachers provide more structure, guidance, and group-learning opportunities to help children feel confident as they move into a more traditional classroom environment.
Choosing Forest Academy does not limit future options. Instead, it provides children with a strong academic and social foundation that supports success wherever they go next.
If you ever have questions about transitions or future placement, we are happy to talk through them with you and support your family in making the best choice for your child.
What are the Fees and Costs?
Fees & Costs

Introduction
Camp Adventure Forest Academy is a Montessori-inspired, nature-based program for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. As a satellite of Grissom Elementary, we focus on hands-on learning, exploration, and child-led discovery in an outdoor setting.
This handbook is designed to communicate our philosophy, policies, and expectations clearly. Please keep it handy for reference throughout the year. We may update it periodically and will share any changes with families.
What is Camp Adventure?
Camp Adventure is a beloved and historic part of the Muncie community. Established in 1939, it began as a summer camp for the Boys Club and has grown into a cherished learning space thanks to the dedication of the Muncie Noon Optimist Club and countless community members. Today, Camp Adventure sits on 41 beautiful acres of woodland and open spaces just outside Muncie. In June of 2025, Muncie Community Schools assumed ownership of Camp Adventure facility.
Over the years, generous donations and hard work transformed Camp Adventure into a fully equipped outdoor education site, complete with trails, a lodge, dining hall, cabins, and even a small lake. It is more than a camp—it’s a place where children learn through hands-on exploration and build confidence, independence, and a deep connection to nature.
At Forest Academy, Camp Adventure serves as our classroom. Students spend their days learning and growing in this outdoor environment, following Montessori principles that support child-led discovery and meaningful experiences. Whether exploring the woods, engaging in sensory work, or participating in group activities, your child will be immersed in a rich, developmentally appropriate learning experience every day.
We’re proud to call Camp Adventure home—and we’re excited for your child to be a part of its continuing story.
How will Forest Academy fit into the Camp Adventure Learning Center space?
Camp Adventure is a unique and versatile space that serves many purposes throughout the year—including outdoor education programs for schools, team-building experiences for businesses, and special events. While Camp Adventure does host field trips and corporate groups, rest assured that Forest Academy will always have its own dedicated space and schedule.
Your child’s learning environment is our top priority. We take great care to ensure that any outside events are scheduled separately and do not interfere with your child’s day-to-day experience. When other groups are on site, Forest Academy students will continue their activities in peaceful, uninterrupted areas of the camp.
In fact, the variety of programs at Camp Adventure only strengthens our mission. They allow us to continually invest in the property, maintain its natural beauty, and provide your child with a rich, safe, and inspiring outdoor classroom year-round.
We are excited to share this one-of-a-kind setting with your child, and we’re committed to making sure they thrive in a calm, nurturing, and engaging environment every single day.
What can parents expect academically?
Forest Academy is a PreK/K satellite classroom of Grissom Elementary that blends Muncie Community Schools’ academic curriculum with a nature-based, child-centered approach. We believe children learn best through active exploration, guided choice, and meaningful connection to their environment.
Our classroom is a prepared environment, meaning all activities are intentionally set up based on each child’s developmental readiness. This encourages confidence, independence, and a genuine love for learning.
At Forest Academy, the classroom extends across the entire Camp Adventure property—including our indoor space, outdoor classroom, shelters, trails, mud kitchen, and more. Learning happens wherever curiosity leads, and every corner of camp is designed to support children’s growth.
We follow a consistent daily rhythm that includes:
- Morning Circle: A time to gather, reflect, and set intentions for the day.
- Outdoor Exploration: Nature walks, gardening, play, and observation.
- Learning Stations: Activities aligned to student readiness, supporting literacy, math, and social-emotional growth.
- Storytelling & Reflection: A calm time to process the day’s experiences and build communication skills.
Academically, students engage in programs like CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) and UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) for strong foundational learning. Concepts in math, science, and language are often explored through the use of natural materials and hands-on experiences. PreK classrooms will use Creative Curriculum teaching strategies.
Students will travel between Grissom Elementary and Camp Adventure daily, maintaining a connection to their base school while benefiting from a rich outdoor learning environment. Parents may also choose pickup/drop-off at Camp Adventure.
At Forest Academy, your child will grow in every way—academically, socially, emotionally, and physically—through purposeful play and meaningful engagement with nature.
Motto
Discover. Learn. Thrive.

If forms ate not completed and received by the deadline, we will assume your child is not returning and the space may be offered to a child on our waiting list.
Dismissal
At Forest Academy, we are committed to providing a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment for all students. While we strive to meet the needs of every child, Forest Academy reserves the right to discontinue services when it is determined that the program is not an appropriate placement for a student. Decisions will be based on the student’s ability to safely and successfully participate in the program and whether the environment supports their educational growth and development.
If a student poses a safety risk to themselves, staff, or other students, or if the student’s needs exceed the scope of services the school is able to provide, Forest Academy may require the family to make alternative arrangements for the student’s care and education.
Our priority is to maintain a safe, respectful, and productive environment that supports the well-being and success of all students and staff within the program.

- The office will notify your child’s teacher, or you may also send a message directly to the teacher via ParentSquare.
- The person picking up your child will need to check in at the office and present a valid driver’s license, which will be photocopied for verification.
This ensures every child leaves safely and with the correct adult.
Photo and Video Use
At Camp Adventure Forest Academy, we use photos and videos as a meaningful tool to document children’s learning, growth, and experiences in our unique outdoor and play-based setting. These visuals support authentic assessment by capturing your child’s development through hands-on activities and exploration, rather than traditional testing.
Photos and videos may also be used to enhance classroom learning, foster peer connections, and strengthen the sense of community among students and families. In addition to internal documentation, images may appear in our newsletters, on Camp Adventure Forest Academy’s social media platforms, in marketing materials, or in coverage by local media, with parental permission.
If you indicate that you do not want your child’s photograph used for media or promotional purposes, Camp Adventure Forest Academy will fully honor that request.
Behavior Management
At Forest Academy, we view all behavior as a form of communication. Our role is to guide children toward self-discipline, empathy, and positive social development. Inspired by Maria Montessori’s philosophy and Forest School principles, our approach emphasizes respect, relationship-building, and internal self-control.
Guiding Principles
- Discipline is developmental; children learn to self-regulate through meaningful work, thoughtful choices, reflection, and respectful relationships.
- Staff create a peaceful and supportive environment where children feel safe, valued, and respected.
- Our outdoor setting encourages collaboration, problem-solving, and responsible risk-taking while maintaining safety and mutual respect.
Expectations for Students
Children are encouraged to:
- Respect themselves, others, and the natural world
- Care for their work, the work of others, and shared materials
- Use words to solve problems and express feelings
- Maintain a clean and safe environment

- Redirect behavior using positive language
- Offer choices and brief, clear explanations
- Help students reflect and problem-solve
- Apply natural consequences or restorative conversations when appropriate
Supporting Self-Regulation and Emotional Growth
Developing emotional control and self-regulation is a critical part of early childhood development. Staff support this by:
- Teaching emotional awareness and self-expression
- Modeling and coaching social-emotional skills Providing a quiet space or “thinking mat” when a child needs to calm down (typically one minute per year of age)
- Guiding reflection conversations, including questions such as:
- What choice did you make?
- Was that a safe, kind, or helpful choice?
- What could you do differently next time?
When Additional Support Is Needed
If a child exhibits ongoing or disruptive behavior, staff will:
- Document observations and patterns
- Communicate openly with families to find positive, supportive solutions
- Adjust the environment or instruction to meet the child’s needs
If a child’s behavior compromises their safety or the safety of others, or significantly disrupts the group, a meeting with the family and program leadership will be held. In rare cases where solutions cannot be found, the family may be asked to withdraw from the program.

Forest Academy promotes:
- Self-esteem, confidence, and motivation to learn
- Independence, collaboration, and responsible risk-taking
- Respect for the natural environment and one another
- Positive relationships and equitable treatment
Forest School staff will:

- Place safety and mutual respect at the center of all experiences
By fostering internal discipline, we help students grow into resilient, reflective, and compassionate individuals.
“Discipline is born when the child concentrates his attention on some object that attracts him/her not only with the useful exercise but with control of error.”- Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind

Communication and Weather Policy
Daily Outdoor Learning & Weather Adjustments
Student well-being, safety, and comfort are always our top priorities. We plan for students to be at Camp Adventure daily as part of our outdoor learning environment. However, in the event of severe weather or an emergency, students will remain in their classroom at Grissom Elementary for the day. Any changes to the daily plan will be communicated promptly through ParentSquare.
Communication with Families
At Forest Academy, we value strong partnerships with families and believe communication is key. We use ParentSquare as our primary communication tool to share:
- Daily updates and classroom highlights
- Important reminders and event information
- Schedule changes or emergency notifications
Please check ParentSquare regularly and ensure your contact information is current. You will also receive direct contact information for your child’s teacher and the Camp Adventure Program Coordinator.
Teachers are happy to chat briefly during drop-off and pick-up. For longer conversations, please email or message via ParentSquare to set up a time. We kindly ask that parents do not interrupt during class time or send written notes in lunchboxes.
Emergency Communication
In the event of an emergency involving your child, we will contact you or your listed emergency contact after ensuring all students are safe and emergency personnel (if needed) have been contacted.
Extreme Weather Policy
While we embrace outdoor learning in all seasons, safety always comes first. Forest Academy staff regularly check the weather to guide daily planning.
- Thunder & Lightning: Students will remain near or take immediate shelter indoors.
- Extreme Cold (approx. 15°F / -9°C): Outdoor time will be shortened or moved indoors based on conditions and student readiness.
- Extreme Heat (approx. 86°F / 30°C): Staff will limit outdoor exposure, prioritize hydration, and monitor for signs of overheating.
Emergencies and Injuries
Accidents and Injuries
All Camp Adventure staff are trained in safety and first aid procedures. In the event of a minor injury—such as a bump, scrape, or small cut—staff will provide basic care, including cleaning the area with soap and water, applying a cold pack, and using a bandage if necessary. An incident report will be completed, and the parent or guardian will be notified at pickup.
For a serious or life-threatening injury, staff will call 911 immediately and contact the child’s family as soon as possible. If a parent or guardian cannot be reached, we will contact an emergency contact listed on your child’s enrollment forms. If emergency treatment or transportation is necessary, a staff member will accompany the child to the nearest hospital.
Please make sure your emergency contact information is always current in PowerSchool and with Camp Adventure. Notify us immediately of any changes.
Meals and Snacks
Meals and Snacks at Camp Adventure
Each day, students will be provided with a sack lunch from Muncie Community Schools Food Service. If you prefer, your child is welcome to bring their own lunch from home. Please do not pack any foods that require heating, as students will not have access to a microwave.
Mealtime will be an opportunity for community building and socialization. Staff will join students for lunch to foster a positive and inclusive dining experience.
At certain times during the year, the Forest Academy teacher may ask parents to provide snacks to help support snack time for students. If your child has any dietary restrictions or food allergies, please update PowerSchool to ensure we are aware and can plan accordingly. If specific accommodations are needed, we ask that families provide what their child needs to safely participate.
Celebrations
Birthday Celebrations
At Forest Academy, birthdays and holidays are joyful opportunities to bring our community together and recognize the traditions that are meaningful to our families.
Birthdays are celebrated in a special way through a candle-lighting ceremony in the classroom. During the celebration, the child carries a globe while walking around a candle that represents the sun. The child walks around the candle the same number of times as their age, symbolizing the passage of time and their growth.
Families who wish to provide a birthday treat may arrange this with their child’s teacher in advance. Treats must follow the school’s nutrition policy and should be simple, such as fruit or mini muffins. All items must be store-bought. Teachers will coordinate an appropriate time for the celebration.
Holiday Celebrations
Forest Academy acknowledges a variety of holidays and cultural celebrations throughout the year. We recognize that these events hold different meanings for each family and provide opportunities for children to learn about diverse traditions.
Families are welcome to share age-appropriate traditions with the class, such as telling a story about a holiday, sharing a family custom, or introducing a cultural celebration. Families interested in participating should contact their child’s classroom teacher to make arrangements.
These experiences help children develop an appreciation for the many cultures and traditions represented in our school community while promoting respect and inclusion.
Outdoor Education Practices
Commitment to Student Safety
Forest Academy believes that carefully guided outdoor experiences help children develop confidence, curiosity, and respect for the natural environment. All activities at Camp Adventure are designed to provide safe, meaningful learning experiences while maintaining high standards of student supervision and safety.
Use of Fire
Fire is occasionally used at Forest Academy to support learning experiences such as science exploration, storytelling, and simple cooking activities. Fire is introduced only after students have demonstrated the ability to follow safety expectations in the forest environment.
Fire Safety Procedures
- Fires are built and managed only by trained Forest Academy staff.
- Fires occur only within a designated fire circle with clearly marked boundaries.
- Children are taught how to safely move and behave around the fire area.
- Staff model safe behavior and reinforce fire safety expectations using age-appropriate language.
- A fire safety risk assessment is maintained and includes emergency procedures and fire suppression tools.
Family Events
The goal of fire experiences is to introduce children to fire in a safe, age-appropriate manner that encourages respect and responsibility. During family events or sessions with parent participation:
- Fire safety expectations will be reviewed at the beginning of the session.
- Parents and caregivers are responsible for closely supervising their child near the fire circle.
Eating, Drinking, and Cooking
Forest Academy teaches children how to stay safe while eating, drinking, and exploring the natural environment.
Food Safety Expectations
Students are taught to:
- Never eat or drink anything found in the forest unless an adult has confirmed it is safe.
- Wait for designated snack times before eating.
- Avoid touching their mouths or noses while exploring natural materials.
Children are also reminded that some plants, berries, and fungi in nature can be harmful.
Handwashing
Students wash their hands with running water and mild soap before eating whenever snacks are provided.
Campfire Cooking
Occasionally, students may participate in simple cooking activities over the campfire, such as:
- Pancakes
- Popcorn using a specially designed popcorn popper
- Bread or crumpets cooked on sticks
All cooking activities:
- Are led by trained adults
- Include close supervision
- Are individually risk assessed
- Maintain appropriate adult-to-student supervision ratios
Snack Time
Snack time provides an opportunity for students and staff to sit together and build community.
When snacks are provided, they may include:
- Fruit
- A small baked item such as a biscuit or flapjack
- Warm hot chocolate during colder months
Snacks are not served every day. Families will be notified in advance when snacks will be offered. Each child should bring a clearly labeled water bottle to school every day. Occasionally, families may be invited to contribute snack items. Communication will be provided ahead of time if needed.
Water Safety: Pond and Creek
Camp Adventure includes natural water features such as a pond and creek that may be used for supervised learning activities.
Supervision and Boundaries
• All water exploration is supervised by trained staff.
• Students are never permitted near water without adult supervision.
• Clear safety boundaries are established and reviewed with students.
• Staff-to-student supervision ratios are increased during water activities.
Safety Procedures
Water exploration focuses on science observation and environmental learning. Swimming is not permitted. Additional safety measures may include:
- Use of water shoes or life vests when appropriate
- Staff modeling safe behavior near water
- Emergency procedures and response plans
- Staff trained in CPR and First Aid
Parent Communication
Families will receive advance notice of planned water-related activities. Participation in creek or pond exploration is optional, and alternative activities will always be available.
